One day, I bought another Men’s Health magazine to kill the time…

Only, it turned out I had bought a Men’s Health training book, not a magazine.

When I opened it, what I found inside were different bodyweight exercises demonstrated in pictures by the Men’s Health male models.

These guys looked amazing and the book said, “if you do these exercises, you can look like that too!”

I was hooked, and on that day back in 2010, I decided to cut back on the excuses and the apathy, and to finally go for what I want in life.

I started off with some bodyweight exercises I saw in the book and soon I decided to join a gym.

Luckily, my older brother, who had been going to the gym for 2 or 3 years at that point, took me under his wing and showed me around.

That’s when my fitness journey began and I seriously started studying training and nutrition in an attempt to develop the lean athletic physique I had always wanted.

I started doing a simple but straightforward gym routine that I found online and I read everything I could get my hands on regarding nutrition.

In the beginning, it sort of worked…

I started seeing some visible improvements and I was becoming leaner and more defined. In fact, it seemed like I was well on my way to getting the body I wanted.

But after the first few months passed, things really began to slow down. I started struggling to see any results at all and, ultimately, my progress came to a halt.

So, I tried it all:

See, at the time I studied economics in university, and in September of 2013, I went to study abroad for an year – in Portugal.

The very first thing I did after finding a place to stay in Coimbra, Portugal, was to find a gym.

Since I was new in town and I didn’t know anyone there, I decided to go to my university’s student relations office.

And when I asked them where I could work out, they gave me the contact of the Olympic weightlifting team with the Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education.

That’s how I met Alex…

Coach Alex was the Olympic weightlifting team’s coach and a retired competitive Olympic lifter who almost qualified for the Olympics!

He had over 20 years of experience – he had started Olympic weightlifting when he was 16.

Though I didn’t do Olympic weightlifting and I just used his gym to do standard exercises, Alex had a lot of experience getting people lean and ripped (just check out Olympic weightlifters’ physiques and you’ll get what I mean).

After meeting me and really seeing how much I wanted to develop a leaner, more athletic physique, Alex took me under his wing and finally gave me the missing pieces of knowledge I lacked.

For example, consider this:

Salivary amylase (α-amylase) is an enzyme in your saliva that starts the digestion of starchy carbohydrates.

The gene that makes amylase, AMY1, varies in copy number from person to person.

More AMY1 genes mean more salivary amylase.

More salivary amylase means you break down carbs more effectively.

So if you have less copies of the AMY1 gene than your buddy Skinny Scott over there does…

When I came back home from Portugal, my family and friends were shocked.

I was in the best shape of my life and everyone noticed.

(Women even started eyeing me on the street, which was REALLY new to me!)

I felt more confident than ever and it showed.
